History

FAST was originally formed in January, 2013.  The “brains” behind it was Jodi Cox Thomas, a graduate student in speech-language pathology at Valdosta State University. She approached Dr. Lynn Adams, her professor who had expertise with Autism Spectrum Disorders, with the idea. The two worked together to offer the first formal meeting. Jodi was a participant in scholarship competitions and FAST became part of her philanthropic mission. She provided support for the original FAST logo as well as food and supplies for the meetings. Another grad student, Elizabeth Baker Dasher, established an Internet presence for FAST by designing its first website.

Following Jodi's graduation, Dr. Adams acted as facilitator of the meetings.  FAST continued to grow and sponsored events such as sensory friendly visits with Santa, Zumbathons, law enforcement trainings, and 5K fundraisers.  Eventually, FAST was granted 501c3 status, becoming an important part of support services for families in the area.

When Dr. Adams decided to retire from teaching, she tapped another former graduate student, Ana Maria Allen, to be the keeper of FAST. Ana Maria developed FAST into an even larger presence in the community for several years. She decided to step down as president as of December 2021 and take on the role of Fundraising Chairman, heading up events such as our annual Dueling Pianos & Art Auction.

In January 2022, Tori Pittman stepped up from her role as Vice President to become the new President. She, along with the rest of the Board members, continue to volunteer their time, pouring into the mission of FAST. We hope it continues to grow in the years to come!
